Sowing Season & Flower Facts:

Vinca:

  • Vinca minor, or the Periwinkle, is a flowering plant non-native to Lake County. Although technically an invasive species, it is popularly used as ground cover in gardens.
  • The flowers of the plant are normally a light blue, but can vary from white to pink to red-violet. It has five petals which unite into a tube.

Zinnia

  • The zinnia endures through many trials and tribulations of unforgiving heat, drought and bugs and still perseveres, thereby making for a perfect gift representing strength and perseverance.
  • Thoughts of friends or thoughts of a missing friend are the most common meanings for the zinnia.

Tithonia

  • Tithonia, along with sunflowers, are the largest, most dramatic annuals for the garden. Some varieties can grow up to 8 feet tall.
  • Tithonia must have full sun, but it will grow in average soil with good drainage.
